Automated Storage System (AS/RS) refers to a system that can automatically process and retrieve materials without manual processing.

Automated warehouse technology is a comprehensive technology for setting up high shelf warehouse and planning, management, mechanical and electrical integration. It consists of three main systems: cargo storage system, cargo access and processing system, control and management system. There is also a matching power supply system, air conditioning and ventilation system, fire alarm system, weighing and measuring system, and information communication system.

The cargo storage system is composed of cargo holds (pallets or cargo containers) on the shelves of three-dimensional warehouses and has the function of cargo storage. Shelf combination, column and layer (defined by JB/T9018-1999) form the goods storage system of automatic warehouse.
Goods in and out and handling conveyor system is responsible for goods in and out. The function of entering and leaving warehouse is composed of stacker, inbound and outbound conveyor, stacking equipment and processing equipment.

Control and management system adopts manual, independent, online or computer network control and other different control methods, depending on the requirements of the automatic warehouse. Computer control and management are usually used.

The automated warehousing system uses high-rise shelves to make full use of space to store goods. Railway road stacker is used to realize three-dimensional automatic transportation of goods from ground to shelf. Pallet conveyor, AGV (automatic guided vehicle) or rail car can realize the automatic transportation of pallet goods on aircraft, and invoice storage warehouse is used for computer software management. Therefore, it is called "automated high shelf warehouse system", also known as "automated warehouse system". The maximum height of the warehouse can reach nearly 50 meters, and the maximum inventory can reach tens of thousands or even more than 100,000 cargo units.
